Bay of Islands in Three Days: A Northland Experience Worth Adding to Your New Zealand Itinerary

Located in Northland, around three to three and a half hours by road from Auckland, the Bay of Islands is known for its sheltered waters, historic settlements and beautiful coastal scenery.

With more than 140 islands, it offers a different pace from New Zealand's busy cities and alpine destinations. Three days is a good starting point for exploring the region.

Day 1: Auckland to Paihia

Travel north from Auckland towards Paihia, the main visitor base in the Bay of Islands.

The drive can be completed in around three to three and a half hours without extended stops, although allowing time for breaks makes the journey more enjoyable.

After checking in, explore the waterfront and enjoy the coastal setting. If time permits, visit nearby Haruru Falls or take a relaxed walk around the area.

Overnight: Paihia.

Day 2: Waitangi and Russell

Begin the day at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, an important site in New Zealand's history. Visitors can explore the grounds, museums, historic buildings and Māori cultural experiences.

Allow several hours rather than treating it as a quick sightseeing stop.

In the afternoon, take the passenger ferry across to Russell. This historic seaside settlement is known for its waterfront, heritage buildings and relaxed atmosphere.

Walk through the village, visit Christ Church and enjoy the views from Flagstaff Hill.

Overnight: Paihia or Russell.

Day 3: Explore the Bay by boat

Dedicate the final day to the water.

A cruise through the islands offers views of secluded bays, coastal scenery and marine wildlife. Some excursions travel towards Cape Brett and the famous Hole in the Rock, subject to weather and sea conditions.

After returning to Paihia, begin the journey back to Auckland or continue north to explore more of Northland.

Practical planning tips

  • Allow at least two nights in the Bay of Islands for a comfortable visit.
  • Book popular cruises and accommodation ahead during summer.
  • Check ferry schedules if staying in Russell.
  • Consider accessibility requirements when selecting boat trips and walking experiences.
  • If extending the trip, explore Kerikeri, the Hokianga Harbour or Cape Reinga.

Add Northland to your New Zealand journey

The Bay of Islands works well as an extension to an Auckland stay or as the opening section of a longer North Island itinerary. It combines coastal scenery, Māori heritage and relaxed seaside experiences without requiring a complicated travel schedule.
