Before you fly
Essential travel tips
The practical stuff we end up explaining on every first call.
Visas & NZeTA
Most visitors need an NZeTA before boarding, and some nationalities need a visitor visa. Apply on the official Immigration New Zealand site — not a third-party lookalike. We can point you to the right page but cannot give immigration advice.
Driving in New Zealand
We drive on the left. Distances look short but roads are slow — add 30% to mapping estimates. Fuel up before Fiordland and the Mackenzie Basin, and never drive the Milford road tired.
Biosecurity
New Zealand is strict about food, plants, wood and soil. Declare anything you are unsure about. The fines are real and the beagles are very good at their jobs.
Money & tipping
The currency is the New Zealand dollar (NZD). Cards are accepted almost everywhere; carry a little cash for small towns. Tipping is not expected, though it is appreciated for exceptional service.
Dietary needs
Vegetarian, Jain and Indian-friendly food is available in the cities and increasingly in smaller towns. Tell us early and we will plan meals into the route, including remote regions where options are limited.
The Tiaki Promise
Tiaki is a commitment to care for New Zealand — land, sea and people. Pack out what you bring in, respect closures and treat Māori sites with the care they deserve.
