The honest answer: there is no bad month, only the wrong itinerary.
December to February
Peak summer. Long days, warm beaches, everything open — and peak prices. Book accommodation and the Milford cruise months ahead. Christmas and New Year are the busiest week of the year.
March to April
Our pick. Stable weather, fewer people, vineyards in harvest and accommodation that is suddenly negotiable. The South Island is at its best.
May to September
Winter. Ski fields in Queenstown and Wānaka, quiet roads everywhere else, and the cheapest rates of the year. Some alpine walks close, and the Milford road can be affected by weather.
October to November
Spring. Blossom, waterfalls at full volume and a country waking up. Weather is changeable — pack layers.
