New Zealand's cherry blossom season is short, local and slightly unpredictable. Unlike Japan, there is no national festival — just neighbourhoods, parks and a few very photogenic streets.
When to come
Blossoms usually peak between mid-September and early October, depending on the region. Auckland is earliest; Otago and Canterbury are two to three weeks later.
The best spots
- Auckland Botanic Gardens — the most reliable city display.
- Hamilton Gardens — compact, free and easy to combine with Hobbiton.
- Wellington Botanic Garden — blossom plus a cable car ride.
- Christchurch Hagley Park — the big, postcard version.
- Alexandra, Central Otago — orchards in full bloom and far fewer visitors.
A word of warning
Blossom is weather-dependent. A windy week can strip a tree overnight. Build flexibility into your itinerary and treat it as a bonus rather than the reason for the trip.
Spring is also our favourite shoulder season: fewer crowds, lower prices and long daylight. If you are planning a September visit, talk to us early — the good lodges book out.
